Stefan started to skate at age 4, and at age 12 he wanted to switch to ice-hockey but his mother didn't allow this. His idol in figure skating is Elvis Stojko. Stefan also admires the speed-skater Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann. He was the first German skater to win Junior Worlds in 2000.
